What technological advances have lead to this? In a nut shell, smaller wireless cameras and advanced computer technology.
· When video cameras came on the scene they were big and obtrusive. Now they are as small as the head of a pin, making them very easy to disguise.
· Do you remember when you heard the word unplugged they were talking about musicians playing an acoustical guitars and the like. Now everything is unplugged; wireless capabilities allow criminals to transfer data without the need of cables that are easily identified, making their criminal acts harder to trace.
· Computers with new technology are more powerful, smaller and wireless abilities not only help our lives they help the criminal minds.

· Criminals have made card readers that pick up the information stored on your ATM's magnetic strip. That's nothing new; however making the card reading device look like your local ATM machine and fitting it directly over the ATM's card slot is. You slide your card in to the slot and it feeds your information to their data base. They now have your identity. It doesn't stop there though.
· Have you ever seen those brochure or deposit slip holders placed on the ATM machine? Beware they might not be what they seem. The criminals use those holders to place wireless hidden cameras to pick up your pin numbers. Now they have your identity and pin giving them easy access to your bank account and anything they want to buy.
In summary: Don't just take for granite that the ATM you are using is safe. Examine it closely, remove the brochures, investigate the ATM card slot and look for suspicious vehicles or people in the surrounding area. This new techno criminal can't possible hit every ATM with high tech gadgets; there are so many, plus the technology though it is reasonable priced is still limited. The criminal has to be within a couple hundred yards to retrieve your information. Remember the best time to learn your lesson about personal security and self defense is before something happens.
